Dubai – A Norwegian woman who was sentenced to 16-months in jail after reporting an alleged rape to police in Dubai has been pardoned. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), officials dropped the sentence given to Marte Deborah Dalelv, 24, for having sex outside of her marriage making her now free to leave the country.
Dalelv’s sentence sparked international outrage after she went public about the charges against her last week. Her alleged attacker who was a co-worker of Dalelv’s, has been identified as a 33-year-old Sudanese man. He was charged with consuming alcohol and sex outside marriage and received a 13-month sentence.
Norway Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide is quoted as stating to Norwegian news agency NTB of Dalelv’s pardon, “The United Arab Emirates and Dubai is a rapidly changing society. This decision won’t only affect Marte Dalelv, who can travel home now if she wishes to, but also serve as a wake-up call regarding the legal situation in many other countries.”
