Washington – Russian hackers stole 160 million bank card numbers after infiltrating corporate networks over a sever-year time frame. As reported by The Christian Science Monitor, federal authorities unveiled indictments in connection with the scheme, which is said to be the largest of its kind ever prosecuted in the United States, on Thursday.
As noted in the report, the data stolen by the hackers allowed for the reproduction of phony cards that were subsequently sold or used for ATM machine withdrawals across the globe.
JetBlue and Dow Jones are among the companies reported to be among the 15 businesses the hackers hit.
Paul Fishman, US Attorney for New Jersey, is quoted in the report as stating of the indictments, “This type of crime is the cutting edge… Those who have the expertise and the inclination to break into our computer networks threaten our economic well-being, our privacy, and our national security.”
