Washington – The White House stated on Thursday that the US is “extremely disappointed” in the decision by Russia to grant National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden asylum in the country. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Snowden entered Russia officially after being granted asylum after previously being in the transit zone of an airport in Moscow.

White House spokesman Jay Carney is quoted by the AP as stating, “We are extremely disappointed that the Russian government would take this step despite our very clear and lawful requests in public and private that Mr. Snowden be expelled and returned to the United States.”

Carney further spoke on the belief that Snowden still poses a potential risk to the US after removing classified information from secure environments, stating, “Mr. Snowden is not a whistleblower… He is accused of leaking classified information. He should be returned to the United States as soon as possible.”
