Honolulu – A Hawaii man seeking the right to take a driver’s license test in Hawaiian has filed a discrimination complaint about it. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Daniel Anthony is seeking to have a case against him for driving without a license dropped, claiming his failure to obtain a license is due to the test not being offered in the language, despite it being classified as one of Hawaii’s official languages.
According to the state Department of Transportation, the test for a state-issued driver’s license is only available in English. Anthony, 35, who speaks English, says his complaint is to bring attention to the Hawaiian language being acknowledged for ceremonial use only despite it having an official status in the state.
Anthony is quoted by the AP as stating of the issue on Monday, “Any time I go to a state office or federal office, I introduce myself in Hawaiian… I have yet to receive services in Hawaiian.”
