Portland, Maine – Plans to repair the nuclear-powered submarine the USS Miami have been dropped by the Navy due to budget cuts. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), officials stated Tuesday that repairing the submarine would have required a cancellation of work on other ships because of the budget constraints.

Rear Adm. Rick Breckenridge, director of undersea warfare, is quoted by the AP as saying of the plans in a statement, “The Navy and the nation simply cannot afford to weaken other fleet readiness in the way that would be required to afford repairs to Miami.”

The submarine was damaged by a fire in May of last year. The estimated cost of repairs was previously $450 million; however, an inspection led to the discovery of additional damage that would raise the cost.
