London – A legal battle has erupted over plans for reburying the remains of England’s King Richard III. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), relatives of the 15th-century monarch were granted permission by a British High Court judge to challenge plans for his remains to be reburied where they were found last year in the city of Leicester.
Judge Charles Haddon-Cave is quoted by the AP as stating in hopes that the matter would be settled out of court, “In my view, it would be unseemly, undignified and unedifying to have a legal tussle over these royal remains” and that both sides should “avoid embarking on the (legal) Wars of the Roses Part 2.”
Richard was killed in battle in 1485. Haddon-Cave is further quoted as stating in his decision to allow the Plantagenet Alliance to take the case to court that there would be “intense, widespread and legitimate public interest and concern in many quarters as to the treatment and final resting place of Richard III’s remains.”
