Washington – Army prosecutors say they have a recording of a soldier and his wife laughing about charges filed in the deaths of several Afghan villagers. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Staff Sgt. Robert Bales pleaded guilty in June, entering a plea arrangement to avoid the death penalty for the killings of civilians in March of last year. The 16 Afghan villagers were reportedly mostly women and children.
Lt. Col. Rob Stelle is quoted by the AP as stating of the recordings, “It certainly goes to evidence in aggravation, the attitude of lack of remorse.”
Bales’ attorney said the clips were taken out of context. The judge, Col. Jeffery Nance, stated he would listen to them in their entirety prior to determining whether they could be used during sentencing.
Sentencing for Bales is set to begin on Tuesday.
