Sydney – Five are believed to have died after a boat carrying over 100 people sank in the Indian Ocean. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), 106 passengers were saved by rescuers; however, five remained unaccounted for when the boat sank Tuesday north of Christmas Island.
A search for the missing passengers was called off Tuesday night according to the AP.
The boat was carrying suspected asylum seekers. Australia is reportedly trying to find ways to stop people smugglers from making these types of dangerous journeys that have led to numerous deaths in recent years.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa is quoted by the AP as stating of the issue, “We are taking every possible step we can to disrupt their networks, and make those who are responsible accountable for their actions.”
