US – A judge has approved a $20 million settlement under which Facebook will pay for the use of member “likes” in endorsing ads. As reported by Yahoo! News, US District Judge Richard Seeborg approved the deal on Monday, deeming the total sum fair provided there were purported challenges in proving financial harm had been done to Facebook members or that they didn’t consent due to their giving “likes” to products.
The legal filing alleges members’ names or likenesses were used without their permission for the endorsement of ads under the social networking giant’s Sponsored Stories program. Billions of dollars were being sought in the class-action lawsuit, in which only a few of the 150 million people reportedly representing the class filed claims.
Seeborg is quoted in the report as writing in his ruling, “The settlement as a whole provides fair, reasonable, and adequate relief to the class, in light of all the circumstances, including the low probability that a substantially better result would be obtained through continued litigation.”
