Moscow – President Vladimir Putin proposed sending lawmakers to the US for talks with Congress on the situation in Syria. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Russian television showed Putin meeting with Valentina Matvienko, the speaker of the upper house, and Sergei Naryshkin, the lower house speaker on Monday, with the lawmakers suggesting to Putin that the move could help persuade US legislators to take a “balanced stance” on the matter.
The lawmakers asserted that polls suggest minimal support has been shown by Americans for armed intervention in the country following a purported chemical weapons attack.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov purports that evidence used to demonstrate alleged chemical weapons use by the Syrian regime is not convincing.
Lavrov is quoted by the AP as stating, “What our American, British and French partners showed us in the past and have showed just recently is absolutely unconvincing… And when you ask for more detailed proof, they say all of this is classified so we cannot show this to you.”
