South Carolina – A South Carolina teacher accused of using detergent to discipline an autistic student has been arrested. As reported by Babble.com, Moncille Thomas, 57, was charged with unlawful neglect of a child after purportedly putting dish detergent on her fingers and in the mouth of a nonverbal autistic student she was disciplining for spitting. She also allegedly hit the student twice in the chest with a dustpan.
Thomas, a special education teacher, was employed by Horry County Schools in 2004 and has reportedly been teaching for 28 years. The district has placed her on administrative leave with pay as an investigation into the matter ensues.
Unlawful neglect of a child is a Class E felony in accordance with South Carolina law and carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison.
