Japan – The number of inmates executed in Japan since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe entered office in December has risen to six after the hanging of a 73-year-old man on Thursday. As reported by AFP, the execution of Tokuhisa Kumagai was announced by Justice Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki.

Kumagai was convicted in the shooting death of a Chinese restaurant owner during a robbery in May of 2004 in addition to other crimes.

There are a reported 132 inmates on death row in Japan. Some international advocacy groups purport the capital punishment system in the country is cruel due to the length of time inmates may spend in solitary confinement while on death row and being told a short time in advance of their impending execution.
