Washington – The House of Representatives voted to approve cuts on food stamp spending on Thursday. As reported by Reuters, the Republican-run House approved $40 billion in cuts over the course of 10 years.
Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who is stated to be a strong proponent of the measure, is quoted by Reuters as stating it was, “wrong for working, middle-class people to pay” for abuse of the program intended to help the poor.
Democrats asserted the cuts would lead to an end of benefits for an estimated 4 million people who need them.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is quoted as stating of the bill, “This legislation is preying on people. P-R-E-Y-I-N-G!”
SNAP, a program that helps individuals buy food, is the largest anti-hunger program in the U.S.
