Sao Paulo – A Brazilian rancher has been sentenced in the murder of an American nun. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Vitalmiro Bastos de Moura was sentenced to 30 years jail time for homicide after being charged with ordering the murder of Dorothy Stang, who was killed in 2005.
Moura has been tried three times in connection with the killing, which prosecutors allege was ordered by him and another rancher. A previous conviction was annulled on appeal by the Supreme Court.
Stang was an Amazon activist who spent decades making efforts to preserve it and defend poor settlers’ rights amid attempts by powerful ranchers to take their lands. Stang was gunned down while on her way to speak at a community meeting.
Over a reported 1,200 activists and others have been killed over the last two decades in connection with attempts to preserve the rain forest.
