Milwaukee – Some small farmers are protesting new federal food safety rules they say may be costly for their businesses. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), dozens of events have been organized across the country by small and organic vegetable farmers seeking to encourage others to write to the Food and Drug Administration about the new rules.
Lindsey Shute, spokeswoman for the National Young Farmers Coalition, is quoted by the AP as stating, “I think the main thing is that it’s really important for farmers and consumers both to make comments to the FDA because these rules will have a huge effect on local farms and their ability to provide.”
The comment period is set to end on Nov. 15. In accordance with the new measures, farmers would be required to implement steps to prevent contamination some say would significantly raise costs.
