Chicago – An Illinois vet group decided to halt donations to a Park District over an official’s refusal to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, Morton Grove, Ill. Local veterans group American Legion Post 134, stopped the donations to the Park District due to Commissioner Dan Ashta’s choice to sit down during the reciting of the pledge at park board meetings.
Joseph Lampert, 47, commander of Post 134, is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “Every veteran has taken an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and has been willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for all of the freedoms we enjoy as Americans… Nowhere did we say that he has to recite the pledge or put his hand over his heart. We would just like to see him stand out of respect.”
According to Joseph Hedrick, post public liaison, the group contributed volunteer hours for park events in addition to $2,600. Park officials have expressed intentions to seek other sponsors so programs supported by the post would not be interrupted until the matter is settled.
