A Columbia University report based on a survey taken following the 2010 massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico indicates a high rate of respondents suffered from respiratory and skin problems following the spill. The survey found that 40 percent of residents of the Gulf Coast reported experiencing these health complications as a result of the spill, with many indicating they had experienced direct exposure to crude oil during cleanup efforts.
As noted by the BP Gulf Oil Spill Help Desk, evidence has shown that the disaster has had major health and financial consequences for many area residents and business owners. Evidence also indicates that many oil spill response workers were impacted as well; however, funds set aside for compensating those who were injured or sustained damages after the initial spill are not available for those who were part of cleanup crews. The situation is even harder for individuals who were not able to afford needed medical treatment, and saw their conditions worsen over time.
The BP Gulf Oil Spill Help Desk is available to provide information and assistance to response workers who have had trouble finding resources to help them with financial recovery. A proposed settlement for cleanup workers is now being considered that could help many who have yet to find relief recover compensation for damages related to their injuries.
Individuals can contact the BP Gulf Oil Spill Help Desk at any time for more information on how to receive help and whether their case may qualify for the proposed settlement. A free case evaluation can be requested when contacting the resource today.
