Pakistan – Private schools throughout Pakistan have banned a book by teenage activist Malala Yousafzai according to education officials in the country. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), officials have made claims that the memoir “I Am Malala,” co-written with British journalist Christina Lamb, fails to show respect for Islam.
Adeeb Javedani, president of the All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association, is quoted by the AP as stating, “Everything about Malala is now becoming clear…To me, she is representing the West, not us.”
Kashif Mirza, the chairman of the All Pakistan Private Schools Federation, is further quoted as stating that Malala, “was a role model for children, but this book has made her controversial…Through this book, she became a tool in the hands of the Western powers.”
Malala was shot in the head last year by the Taliban after advocating for the education of girls. Her memoir was released in October.
