Philadelphia – Two construction companies have been fined nearly $400,000 over a building collapse in Philadelphia along busy Market Street on June 5. As reported by Reuters, federal officials stated Thursday that the companies failed to follow “basic safety precautions” that could have prevented the fatal building collapse.
Six people were killed when the four-story building that was being demolished collapsed and fell on a neighboring Salvation Army store.
Campbell Construction, the lead contractor, was fined by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration $313,000, and S&R Contracting was issued a fine of $84,000.
David Michaels, OSHA’s assistant secretary of labor, is quoted by Reuters as stating to reporters during a press conference via telephone, “This case is an egregious case… We should not be here today if two employers that OSHA has cited today had followed very obvious and basic safety precautions.”
