Buffalo – Several parents of students at Buffalo’s Build Academy expressed outrage after a pre-K teacher sent a note home complaining about the unclean appearance and body odors some students were purported to show up with at school. As reported by WIVB, the teacher allegedly stated in the note that it was hard to be around some of the students, writing “several children in pre-K, ages 3 and 4, are coming to school, sometimes daily, with soiled, stained and dirty clothes.”
Kimberly Wells, who was one of the parents who received the note, is quoted in the report as stating, “That’s not right. She could have called the parent on the phone; she could have had a meeting at the school face-to-face. I tried talking to the teacher about this and she didn’t want to hear anything I had to say.”
According to the report, the note was purportedly not sent out with the permission of the principal. The note was brought up at a school board meeting with a board member asserting the matter should be handled within the building.
Mental Health Counselor Lynne Shine is further quoted as stating of the teacher’s handling of the situation, “If the teacher was concerned about it or the teacher was uncomfortable or the teacher has headaches for different odors, you know anything, and we don’t know what the teacher’s thoughts were. Just like in any other kind of profession, you need to take it to the chain of command. You don’t go directly to the parents and say that, especially not knowing what the situation may be.”
