Los Angeles – A judge has ordered a hot sauce maker to stop discharging an “offensive” odor from its plant following complaints from people living nearby who said it was impacting their health.
As reported by Reuters, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert O’Brien ruled on Tuesday that Huy Fong Foods’ operations that cause the fumes, which residents in Irwindale have stated have been an irritant to their eyes and throat, must be halted and changes made to mitigate the problems. The request that all operations be shut down; however, was reportedly denied.
Irwindale attorney Stephen Onstot is quoted as stating to Reuters, “Neither the city, nor the judge, was specific in terms of what has to be done to cease the odors and left how that goal is achieved up to the defendant.”
Huy Fong Foods manufactures red Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, which is one of the nation’s top-selling condiments.
