Michigan – A lawsuit has been filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops alleging its ethical guidelines for Roman Catholic hospitals were the reason a pregnant woman, who went into labor prematurely and suffered the loss of her baby, was given negligent care. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the ACLU asserts that Tamesha Means, who was treated at the Michigan-based Catholic hospital Mercy Health Muskegon, was not made aware of the health risks associated with continuing her pregnancy or the probability that her child would not survive.
As noted in the report, a number of mergers between secular health care systems and Catholic hospitals in the U.S. have some questioning how much impact religious teachings will have on provided medical services for them.
Kary Moss, executive director of the Michigan ACLU, is quoted by the AP as stating of the lawsuit, “It’s not just about one woman… It’s about a nationwide policy created by nonmedical professionals putting patients in harms’ way.”
