Honolulu – As the new law permitting marriage between same-sex couples became effective in Hawaii, several couples lined up for marriage licenses. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), same-sex marriage in the state became legal on Monday, leading dozens to choose the landmark day to wed.
According to the state Department of Health, 179 applications were received by midafternoon by gay couples on Monday, with 130 of the couples reportedly being Hawaii residents.
Keola Akana, who entered into a civil union with his partner Ethan Wung last year, is quoted by the AP as stating of their marriage plans, “Got dinged on taxes last year because we’re not legally married federally, and we will be married for taxes this year… Now we’re equal to everybody in Hawaii that’s married, everybody in the nation and the world that’s legally married, so that’s an honor.”
