Manhattan, NY, 11/29/2020 / nynews /

Electric Bikes and Scooters Legalized

Electric Bikes and scooters are up legally for people especially the immigrant delivery workers in the New York City across its five important regions Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, and the Bronx as per the latest law passed by the New York City Council on November 23rd.

In New York City, now it’s completely legal to ride electric bikes that can reach a speed of 20 MPH and bikes with an allowed speed of 25 MPH. Considering the potential dangers these e-bikes and scooters pose to pedestrians and drivers, it was put on hold for a long time, and with the latest law advocated by the transportation and food delivery advocates, the stubborn holdout against the electric scooters and bikes has come to an end across the five boroughs of the city.

This is a big win for delivery workers and immigrant rights groups because the bill passed and approved by the council legalizes e-bikes and scooters and allows the locals to decide on the regulation of these vehicles. It is observed that throttle-based e-bikes are made legal for delivery workers, and dock-less scooters like Lime and Bird are permitted upon the approval by the municipalities.

There are 3 classes of e-bikes, the class 1 e-bikes are pedal-assisted without throttle, the class 2 e-bikes are throttle assisted that are allowed with a maximum speed of 20mhp, and the class 3 e-bikes are throttle assisted with a maximum speed of 25 mph.

The e-scooters are throttled with an upper cap at 15mph and require the riders to wear a helmet especially those who are under 18 years of age. The law also requires the class 3 e-bikers especially the food delivery workers to wear a helmet.

It’s a Big move, isn’t it?

Legalizing the e-bikes and e-scooters is a big move for several immigrant groups and delivery workers who have been fighting for years to overturn the rules. It’s a common sight of pedal-assisted e-bikers introduced by Citi Bike are seen moving in the popular streets and used by most food delivery workers. The legalization of e-bikes and e-scooters was passed by the city’s council and legislation in June that required the lawmakers and government to lift the ban on e-bike and e-scooters that provide sharing programs similar to Citi Bikes and stand a great benefit to the business.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is observed that most New Yorkers limited their public transport to contain the virus, and the lift on the ban of e-bikes and e-scooters stands as the best mode of transportation preferred option for most people as it’s more convenient and comfortable now.
