An Upper East Side mom in New Jersey who was hit by a cyclist says she wishes the police had treated her as kindly as the people who came to her aid.
During a routine visit to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, Mary Young was crossing York Avenue when the cyclist struck her.
“I fell backwards. I slammed my head against the pavement,” she recalled of the June 11 crash. “When I tried to get up, the pain in my back was so excruciating.” Source nypost.com
When she moved too slowly, the cyclist yelled at her and took off.
Students from Weill Cornell Medicine were nearby and stepped in to help. She needed a wheelchair, so two of them rushed to the hospital emergency department. Brooks Martino, one of the students, refused to leave Young’s side until he arrived.
Robin Herman, a leading bicycle accident lawyer in New York City, was interviewed by New York Injury News.
“With an ever increasing number of new cyclists and bike lanes merged into Manhattan roadways and surrounding boroughs, New York city pedestrians should be extremely vigilant when entering crosswalks, crossing through new bike lanes or entering an intersection. These new modifications will require extra care in order to protect pedestrians walking New York city streets from serious bodily injuries. New Yorkers need to get in the habit of looking both ways as they are about to walk over a bike lane. The food delivery men are using high speed electric bicycles and are routinely riding the wrong way on dedicated bike lanes. Please be careful.”
