New York – The federal government has shut down a black market website known as Silk Road. As reported by PCMag.com, Ross William Ulbricht, the man believed to be behind the site, which is known for trafficking activities involving illegal goods, has been arrested and charged with narcotics trafficking conspiracy, computer hacking conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy according to a complaint filed in New York district court.
Silk Road was described by FBI Special Agent Christopher Tarbell as a “sprawling black-market bazaar, where illegal drugs and other illicit goods and services have been regularly bought and sold by the site’s users.”
Ulbricht allegedly made his activities online anonymous through a Tor network, which makes it difficult to track PCs that are associated with it.
Tarbell further referred to Silk Road as “the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet,” which generated a reported profit of $1.2 billion and $80 billion respectively in the 2.5 years it has been in operation since 2011.
