Washington – The Pentagon has named a special envoy for the closure of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay. As reported by Reuters, the announcement of congressional committee attorney Paul Lewis being named to the position was made on Tuesday by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.
President Barack Obama made a pledge in 2009 to close the facility within a year. He renewed the pledge earlier this year as detainees went on a hunger strike which led to their being force fed.
The Pentagon is quoted by Reuters as releasing the statement about Lewis, “Special Envoy Lewis brings a wealth of experience from his previous position.”
Lewis will reportedly take up the post on November 1st. A purported 164 prisoners are being held at Guantanamo according to the Pentagon.
