New Jersey – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ended his legal battle against same-sex marriage in the state on Monday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the state is now the 14th to permit same-sex marriage.
Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for Christie, is quoted by the AP as saying in a statement, “Although the governor strongly disagrees with the court substituting its judgment for the constitutional process of the elected branches or a vote of the people, the court has now spoken clearly as to their view of the New Jersey Constitution and, therefore, same-sex marriage is the law.
“The governor will do his constitutional duty and ensure his administration enforces the law as dictated by the New Jersey Supreme Court.”
Christie has supported the previous civil union law in the state, but opposed gay marriage.
A state judge ruled in September that New Jersey must allow marriage between gay couples beginning this month.
