Washington – The White House has refused to comment on an allegation that the United States spied on German Chancellor Angela Merkel. As reported by Reuters, the White House acknowledged that tensions with allies have arisen out of claims of the U.S. snooping on Merkel’s cellphone communications.
White House spokesman Jay Carney is quoted in the report as stating, “We are not going to comment publicly on every specified alleged intelligence activity… The president spoke with Chancellor Merkel, reassured her that the United States is not and will not monitor the chancellor’s communications.”
United States’ ambassador, John B. Emerson, has been summoned by Germany’s foreign minister to discuss the matter according to a German government spokesperson.
