South Bend, IN–South Bend Fire Department officials responded to a dust flash explosion that resulted in fire at the Lock Joint Tube plant around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2009. The explosion sent a flame through the manufacturing plant’s exhaust system and onto the rooftop filtering unit. As reported by the South Bend Tribune, the Lock Joint Tube plant located on West Ireland Road suffered a dust explosion from a buildup of dust in the building that ignited from a welding arc.
Lock Joint Tube, a steel tubing manufacturer for automobiles, furniture, exercise equipment, and health care was evacuated by the South Bend Fire Department and the fire was contained and extinguished quickly. Close to 20 workers were at the plant at the time of the dust explosion and one worker was transported to an area hospital by emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. The steel worker whose name has not been released reportedly suffered burn injuries to his arms and face.
