Houston, TX– A freight truck rear-ended a school bus that had stopped to pick up a student, which resulted in Life Flight being called to the scene. The two-vehicle collision occurred around 8:00 a.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010 on Lee Road near the Eastex Freeway, as reported by KHOU.
According to officials, an Aldine Independent School District (ISD) school bus, which was occupied by a special-needs student, a bus aide and a bus driver, had reportedly stopped to pick up another MacArthur High student when a freight truck smashed into the rear of the bus. The bus was at a full and complete stop with its loading light engaged. The entire cab of the freight truck was completely destroyed. The rear of the school bus was significantly damaged with the glass panels on the emergency exit door and rear windows of the bus completely shattered. The driver of the freight truck, a 30-year-old man, was seriously injured and was airlifted from the scene by a Life Flight helicopter. An aide on the bus, who is pregnant, and a student were transported by emergency medical services (EMS) teams via ground ambulance to the hospital as a precaution. The bus driver did not sustain any injuries. Harris County police officials are investigating the wreck. No charges have been filed at this time.
