Indianapolis, IN—A tow truck driver was tragically run over while helping a stranded motorist on I-70, which then caused a five-car crash. The near fatal accident occurred on Tuesday morning, January 12, 2010 around 9:00 a.m. on the westbound lanes of I-70 just west of Shadeland Avenue, as reported by WXIN.
According to police officials, a tow truck driver was helping a disabled vehicle that was broke down on the shoulder of the highway when a van sideswiped the tow- truck driver, which ignited a chain-reaction five-vehicle wreck. The tow-truck driver Mark Daily, 35, reportedly survived the wreck, but his injuries were not disclosed. Four people involved in the pile-up were taken to local hospitals by emergency medical services (EMS) teams for treatment of their injuries by doctors and nurses. Officials described the injuries as non-life threatening, and everyone is expected to recover. The types of injuries they sustained were not disclosed. It is also unknown how the other vehicles became involved in the accident. Police officials are reportedly conducting a full investigation into the wreck. The driver of the van did not obey the move-over law, and was cited by police officers for unsafe lane movement and following too close.
