Product liability lawyer alerts- CPSC announced product recall of refrigerators due to injury hazard posed by malfunctioning door hinges.
Washington, DC—Liebherr-Hausgeraete Ochsenhausen GmbH, of Germany, has participated in the voluntary recall of Liebherr Built-In 24-Inch Wide Single Door Refrigerators, after it was noted that the door could detach, subsequently posing an injury hazard to consumers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://www.cpsc.gov announced the recall on Wednesday, January 27, 2010.
Approximately 2,700 of the refrigerators, imported from Ontario, Canada-based Liebherr-Canada Ltd, have been recalled due to defective door hinges. Liebherr has allegedly received a total of 13 consumer complaints, reporting detaching doors. Two of the 13 reports resulted in injuries consisting of bruising and strains.
The refrigerators, which were sold nationwide in appliance and specialty retail stores for between $2,500 and $3,200, were on the market from January 2005 to November 2009. Model numbers included in the product recall were listed as R1400, RI1400, RB1400, and RBI1400, which can be located on the left interior side of the single-door refrigerator, behind the bottom drawer. Side-by-side refrigerators involved in the recall have model numbers including SBS240, SBS24I0, SBS245, and SBS24I5. The refrigerators are made of stainless steel and reportedly come in other custom finishes. The brand name “Liebherr” can be located on the top interior control panel of single-door refrigerators, but is reportedly not located on side-by-side refrigerators.
Consumers have been urged to contact Liebherr to schedule a free in-home repair of faulty refrigerator door hinges. If the door hinge has not already become loose and is working properly, consumers may continue to use the refrigerator until it has been repaired, as a safety precaution.
