South Carolina Highway Patrol alert- An 18-wheeler jack-knifed, then crashed into a Ford SUV and a Mercedes.
Charleston, SC—Five people were rushed to the hospital after a tractor-trailer rolled onto its side and struck two other vehicles on Monday afternoon, February 1, 2010. The motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred around 3:30 p.m., along I-26 near the Rosemount Road interchange, as reported by The Post and Courier.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a 2007 Freightliner semi-truck, driven by William Amaker, 33, apparently swerved to avoid colliding with another vehicle in a construction area. The semi truck then struck a 2003 Ford SUV, causing the semi to jack-knife and roll over onto its side. The semi then slid down the highway and crashed into a disabled 1996 Mercedes, which was stopped off the side of the roadway with a flat tire. A 65-year-old woman, who was the driver of the Mercedes, was outside of the car when the semi slid into it. The woman, and two of her passengers were injured in the crash. Charleston County EMS transported all three victims to Medical University Hospital for treatment of their injuries. One of the passengers was reportedly so seriously injured that they were in the intensive care unit (ICU). EMS teams also rushed the Ford SUV driver, a 31-year-old male, and Amaker to Roper St. Francis Hospital for treatment. Police officials charges Amaker was charged with driving too fast for the conditions.
