Legal news for Arizona personal injury attorneys. A woman was hit and killed by a wheel that flew off a wrecked dragster.
Arizona personal injury lawyer alert- A woman was killed by a wheel from a NHRA dragster crash at the Firebird International Raceway.
Phoenix, AZ—A racing enthusiast who was enjoying the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Arizona Nationals was involved in a freak accident, when a tire flew off a crashing dragster and hit a woman in the stands. The fan was tragically killed on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Firebird International Raceway, as reported by NBC Sports.
The female fan was enjoying the first-round Top Fuel run when suddenly Antron Brown lost control of his Matco Tools/U.S. Army car on the strip, slinging its left rear wheel into the packed stands. As the wheel flung off the car, it flipped onto its right side, slid across the track, then hit and climbed the left-lane retaining wall of track. Spilt fuel on the track created a flash flame as the wrecked dragster came to a rest.
The woman who was hit by the air-borne wheel was airlifted to a Phoenix-area hospital for treatment, but her injuries proved fatal soon after arrival. The drag racer, Brown, was uninjured in the wreck and was able to climb out of his heavily damaged dragster. The deceased woman’s identity is currently being withheld. The race continued without further incident. A full investigation is underway.
Gila River emergency responders also reported to the scene.
