News for Michigan criminal attorneys- Man arrested in connection with child neglect; Department of Human Services to probe incident.
Jackson, MI—Two young children were left in a car and deprived of food for two days as their father irresponsibly went on a drinking spree, leading to his Sunday, April 4, 2010 arrest in connection with the incident. The Hillsdale County, Michigan man was formally charged with second-degree child abuse on Monday, April 5, 2010, according to information provided by ClickOnDetroit.com.
An anonymous woman apparently discovered the children in the abandoned vehicle, located outside the Summit Lanes Bowling Alley in Summit Twp. and proceeded to call 911. The woman reportedly contended, “There is a Pontiac Grand Prix. It’s right outside of Gypsies. … with two toddlers inside the back seat while their mom was inside the bar… They looked about 3 and 4. They’re really young. I think one might have been sleeping. The other one started to open the door when I came out.”
Deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department were subsequently dispatched to the scene, where they went on to arrest the children’s 28-year-old father, identified as Richard Labo, as well as their 27-year-old uncle, whose identity was not released. Both men were allegedly under the influence when they were apprehended. The children, ages 4 and 6, alleged they had not eaten anything in two days. They have since been returned to the care of their mother.
While prosecutors charged Labo with second-degree child abuse with regard to the neglectful incident, they reportedly noted that the children’s uncle was not legally responsible for the children’s wellbeing or safety. Labo is reportedly being held on a $20,000 bail. Authorities from the Department of Human Services (DHS) are expected to conduct a full investigation into the episode.
