West Palm Beach, FL—Six fatalities in the past week have some wondering if being employed as a census worker should be added to list of “most dangerous jobs.” Car accidents in the last seven days have been responsible for the untimely deaths of six census workers, which have occurred in Texas, Florida, South Carolina and California, as reported by the Washington Post.
Two deaths occurred when a tractor-trailer struck a vehicle that was carrying two Texans as they were delivering census materials on April 30, 2010. Officials reported that a 67-year-old census worker was traveling from a regional census office in Midland, Texas to pick up materials for Lubbock, when the worker failed to stop at a stop sign at an intersection. A tractor-trailer subsequently sideswiped the census worker’s vehicle. The census worker and another 31-year-old census worker were pronounced dead at the scene.
A 73-year-old census worker in South Carolina was also killed on April 30 when the tire on her car lost tread. She apparently lost control of her vehicle and slammed into a tree as a result. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband and a co-worker, who were also in the vehicle, only suffered minor injuries.
In addition, fatal crashes were reported in Florida and California involving census workers. It is unclear whether all the victims were working when the deadly accidents occurred, but they were reported as the first fatalities of the 2010 Census.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported that 21 employees have died while on the job from 1998 until last year. Those deaths included one woman who was attacked by a dog, and another, whose death was ruled a suicide.
