Quebec, Canada—Pelican International, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), issued a voluntary recall of utility sled tow hitches. Approximately 250 snow sled hitches may pose injury hazards to consumers. The CPSC announced the product safety recall on Tuesday, May 25, 2010.
Though Pelican Internationa received no reports of injuries in connection with the product being recalled, they were informed of 10 instances in which the hitch screws came loose.
Since vibrations are created when items are being towed with the hitches, screws may have the potential to come loose and fall off the hitch.
As a result, the sled and hitch could disconnect from the towing vehicle, leaving users and bystanders susceptible to injuries.
According to the CPSC news release, “The tow hitch pivot is black metal and measures about 9.25 inches in length and 3.25 inches in diameter. The hitch is used in connection with the Pelican Snow Trek Utility sled. The hitch allows a Snow Trek sled to be connected to a snowmobile or other similar transportation device.”
The faulty snow sled hitches were sold at Paricon Inc., V.G. Grace and other regional disturbers and sports retail stores nationwide. The product was sold between January 2007 and December 2009. The hitches were valued at about $50 when purchased alone, or $130 to $250 when purchased with the sled.
