Memphis, TN—Two officers from the Memphis Police Department (MPD) were in the middle of a training mission when something went wrong, according to information provided by MyEyeWitnessNews.com.
The problem, which remains under investigation, prompted the pilots to conduct an emergency landing. Both suffered non life-threatening injuries during the Sunday, May 30, 2010 incident.
Reports indicated a pilot and training instructor were aboard the aircraft at an altitude of approximately 500 feet when they were forced to make an unexplained emergency landing. The emergency landing occurred at the Air Support Unit in Frayser around 12:45 p.m.
The helicopter sustained extensive damage in the aviation-related incident. Its occupants suffered injuries as well, though they were luckily deemed to be non life-threatening.
The unidentified instructor was reportedly taken to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis (the MED) for treatment. According to MPD Maj. Vernell Stepter, “Both pilots advised that they did have soreness.”
With regard to the damage, Maj. Stepter stated, “The tailbone was cut in half by the main rotor.”
The damaged helicopter was placed in a hangar pending the arrival of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigators.
Maj. Stepter noted, “When you’re dealing with numbers and the amount of flying that the pilots do here… It’s just like patrolmen who drive squad cars, the numbers will basically revolve and catch up with you, and things might happen.”
Investigations continue.
