Fargo, ND—“It was the charge that was fitting,” said State Highway Patrol Capt. Kyles Ternes in response to the $20 traffic ticket that was issued to the woman who killed a motorcyclist, when she crossed the center line. On May 19, Faith Mitzel drove over the center line in northeastern North Dakota, near Fort Totten and hit two of the four motorcyclists who were traveling in the opposite direction, as reported by the Star Tribune.
The crash killed a newlywed who was riding with her husband. Another motorcyclist traveling in the pack had to have his foot amputated as a result.
The Highway Patrol hand delivered the traffic citation to the 92-year-old Oberon, N.D. resident on Monday, June 14, 2010.
Authorities stated there was no evidence that Mitzel was speeding or under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time. The Benson County attorney’s office was involved in the decision and agreed on the course of action.
Sheri Leidholt, 30, of Devils Lake, N.D. was killed in the crash. She had only been married four days to James Leidholt before the collision.
