Federal lawyers unseal $50 million Medicare fraud centered in Miami and Detroit.
Miami, FL(JusticeNewsFlash.com)–Federal agents took Miami and Detroit by storm this morning arresting dozens of doctors, medical assistants, company owners, and patients on Wednesday morning as reported the Washington Post. The arrests came when the Justice Department unsealed criminal indictments handed down by a Detroit grand jury against 53 health care professionals and patients accused of a $50 million Medicare fraud involving high cost HIV-AIDS treatments.
According to federal prosecuting attorneys and court documents outlining the federal grand jury indictments, dozens of people submitted false Medicare claims for unnecessary and sometimes never provided HIV-AIDS treatments. Allegedly, false claims submitted to Medicare involved unneeded infusion drug treatments and physical therapy and occupational therapy services. A news conference, held by the Attorney General, the director of Health and Human Services (HHS) http://www.hhs.gov, and the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) http://www.fbi.gov, announced the indictments and further solidified their push to crackdown on health care fraud. The federal agencies confirmed the FBI currently has 2,400 open health care fraud investigations.
