Wichita, KS—Five people were burned, some seriously, during an accident at a local asphalt plant. The workplace accident took place around 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday, July 12, 2010 at Shilling Asphalt, located at 119th St. near the Turnpike, as reported by KSN.
Officials reported that they are still trying to determine how the accident occurred, but they believe the workers were burned while trying to transfer tar from a tank.
A witness, Tom Peterson said “An employee came running towards me with hot oil on his face and arm,” after 300-degree tar spewed out of a tank, and burnt five workers. Peterson said he then called 911 and tried to help by cooling him down “with an ice cooler chest.”
Two workers were airlifted by helicopters to an area hospital in critical condition. Three other workers were rushed by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of serious burns.
Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were notified of the accident, and are expected to conduct a full investigation. OSHA will determine if all safety precautions were implemented to deter such an accident.
