Wellsville, KS—A school bus rollover in eastern Kansas injured nine people, as they were on their way back to Missouri from a church camp. The injurious accident occurred around 10 a.m., along Interstate 35 near Wellsville, reported the Lawrence Journal-World.
Thirty-four people, including the driver, four teenage counselors and 20 children were on the bus at the time. The bus was reportedly returning home from a Baptist church camp in rural Franklin County when it overturned for unknown reasons.
Eight children were rushed to area hospitals by ambulance for treatment of injuries, which ranged from potential broken bones and back and neck pain, including bruises and cuts. One child suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City for treatment. The condition of that child is currently unknown.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident. Officials believe the bus driver overcorrected, causing the bus to roll before it came to a rest in the northbound lanes of the highway.
Investigations are underway.
