St. Louis Land O Lakes Madagascar cocoa products recalled for salmonella scare.
St. Louis, MO–Precision Foods Inc. has participated in a voluntary recall of certain Madagascar Vanilla cocoa products. Precision Foods Inc. is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. The recall was issued as a precaution after two of the company’s suppliers, AMFOTEK and Plainview Milk Products Co-op, notified the company of a possible Salmonella contamination. Plainview Milk’s Instant Non-Fat Dry Milk had recently been recalled due to a Salmonella contamination. Federal regulators with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov announced the voluntary recall on July 2, 2009. The FDA is an agency under the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
The following item is subject to recall:
12.5 oz foil bags of Land O Lakes International Drinking Cocoa “Madagascar Vanilla”, bearing a “Best By 09/04/10” or “Best By 11/05/10” date. The UPC code is “8 78326 00071 0”.
No illnesses related to the recalled Madagascar Vanilla cocoa product have been reported. However, production and distribution of the particular recalled item has been temporarily withheld as safety regulators investigate the case. On rare occasions, Salmonella can cause severe, or deadly, infections in children, elderly people, and individuals with poor immune systems. In otherwise healthy people, symptoms can be expected to include abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, bloody diarrhea, and fever. The recalled cocoa product was distributed through mail orders and in retailers across the U.S. Consumers who have purchased the recalled item should cease consumption of the product immediately.
