Overland Park, KS—A bricklayer was tragically killed on Friday, September 17, 2010, when the scaffolding he was using suddenly collapsed from underneath him at a soon-to-be middle school. The fatal construction accident occurred at about 1:50 p.m., at the site of a future Blue Valley school in the 12500 block of West 175th Street in south Overland Park, as reported by KMBC.
According to Overland Park police officials, James D. Tyree, 52, of Eudora, Kan., and two other workers were working on the scaffold in a three-story interior stairwell of the school when they fell about 30 to 35 feet for unknown reasons.
Tyree was tragically killed in the fall, while the two other workers were injured.
One worker reportedly sustained a broken leg and the other sustained “minor” injuries. It was not reported if they both were transported to a hospital for treatment.
The workers were employed by Lindsey Masonry of Kansas City, Kansas, which is a subcontractor at the site.
Officials have yet to report what caused the scaffolding to collapse from underneath the workers. U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) officials will be conducting a full investigation into the fatal construction accident.
