Huntington Beach, CA — A boat explosion in Huntington Harbor injured eight people Saturday, November 26, 2011, as a result of a leaky fuel line. The blast occurred around 11:30 a.m., as the boat just pulled away from the dock and was turning around after smelling gasoline.
According to reports, the 24-foot cabin cruiser pleasure boat had just pulled away from the public launch ramp, when passengers began to smell gasoline. The boat’s operator turned the watercraft around and was headed back to shore when the engine sputtered and an explosion occurred.
The boat was headed to Long Beach at the time.
The explosion threw several passengers off the vessel, and others jumped into the water after the boat caught on fire.
Responding emergency crews transported eight people to area hospitals for treatment of burns and possible broken bones.
The boat drifted to a mud flat located near the launch ramp, where firefighters extinguished the fire.
Investigations into the incident and what caused the boat to explode are underway.
