California automobile accident attorney alert- Dense fog on Highway 99 causes crash and 18-vehicle pile-up.
Fresno, CA—Dense and heavy fog is to blame for a massive 18-vehicle pile-up on the southbound lanes of Highway 99. The multiple vehicle wreck happened on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 8:20 a.m., as reported by the Sun Journal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated it is unknown how the chain reaction crash occurred, but fog is a likely factor. When police officials and rescue teams arrived on the scene of the crash they reported a 10-15 foot visibility range. Responding rescue crews cut three victims out of their badly damaged vehicles that collided with a tractor-trailer. One woman was reportedly trapped inside her crushed car for 40 minutes before rescuers could free her from between two 18-wheelers. Another woman jumped from her car, ran to the center divider, and to the other side of the freeway to avoid being hit by all the cars crashing around her. Ten victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment of moderate injuries sustained in the crash. Numerous other victims complained of scratches and cuts but denied medical treatment at the scene. Officials with the California Highway Patrol are conducting a full accident investigation into the 18-car pile up.
