West Palm Beach, FL — The mother of an 18-year-old girl who was killed in a car crash last February has filed a lawsuit against American Heritage, asserting the school “set the stage” for her death, WPTV.com reported.
Melissa Bergstein’s mother, Nicole Van Den Bergh filed the lawsuit in Palm Beach County Circuit Court, which contends that American Heritage should have kept tighter control on their former assistant wrestling coach, Eric Popper.
Van Den Bergh also named Melissa’s boyfriend and driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, Mateo Londono Armel and his father, along with Popper.
The lawsuit claims that’s Popper was “improperly socializing with students” during a celebration after a wrestling tournament, which was prior to the single-vehicle accident that led to Melissa’s death.
Londono lost control of his vehicle on Lantana Road and slammed into a palm tree.
American Hertiage, Londano and Popper have not commented on the case.
American Heritage is a private school located in Plantation, Florida.
