Centennial, Colorado – The accused gunman in a Colorado movie theater mass shooting has been formally charged in connection with the incident. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), James Holmes, a former neuroscience student, was charged Monday with first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of 12 people and attempted murder of 58 others who were among several moviegoers at a screening of the new Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” on July 20.
Holmes, 24, was charged with 24 counts of murder and with attempted murder on 116 counts. Additional charges brought against him include possession of explosives.
Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver, is quoted by the AP as stating of the case, “I don’t think it’s too hard to predict the path of this proceeding… This is not a whodunit. … The only possible defense is insanity.”
