New Delhi – Demonstrators gathered together Sunday for the 5th Delhi Queer Pride parade in India, demanding an extension of anti-discrimination laws for gays in the country. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), gay rights activists carried banners and waved posters demanding anti-discrimination laws be extended to schools, workplaces, and other spaces.
The Delhi High Court decriminalized gay sex in 2009; however, activists say issues remain with the social acceptance of homosexuals in India. Conservative groups are seeking to have the court’s ruling overturned.
A statement issued by rights groups at the parade is quoted by the AP as stating, “We are demanding that all people be allowed to exercise their right to live their lives with dignity and freedom, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.”
